Markha Valley Trek

• Morning: Continue acclimatization with light sightseeing in Leh.
  • Shanti Stupa: Offers panoramic views of Leh and the surrounding mountains.

  • Thiksey Monastery: A stunning monastery resembling the Potala Palace.

• Afternoon: Relax or do some last-minute shopping for trekking essentials in Leh.
• Overnight: Hotel in Leh (3,500m / 11,500ft).

• Morning: After breakfast, drive from Leh to Zingchen (approx. 1 hour). This is the starting point of your trek.
• Trek: Begin your trek by entering the Hemis National Park. The trail gradually ascends through a narrow gorge. You'll encounter stunning landscapes and possibly spot some wildlife.
• Destination: Reach the small village of Yurutse.
• Trek Duration: Approx. 4-5 hours.
• Overnight: Homestay or camp at Yurutse (approx. 4,160m / 13,650ft).

• Morning: Today is a challenging but rewarding day as you cross the Ganda La Pass. The ascent to the pass can be steep.
• Ganda La Pass (4,965m / 16,300ft): From the top, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Zanskar Range, Ladakh Range, and the Karakoram Range in the distance.
• Descent: A long descent will lead you to Shingo, and then continue through a beautiful narrow gorge that opens out into the main Markha Valley.
• Destination: Reach Skiu, a charming village where the Markha and Zanskar rivers meet.
• Trek Duration: Approx. 7-8 hours.
• Overnight: Homestay at Skiu (approx. 3,360m / 11,020ft).

• Morning: Enjoy a relatively easier and pleasant walk along the Markha River. The trail passes through willow and poplar trees, and sea-buckthorn bushes.
• River Crossings: You'll cross the Markha River several times.
• En route: Pass through small villages like Chaluk.
• Destination: Arrive at Markha, the largest village in the valley, with around 20 traditional homes, an old monastery, and the ruins of a fort.
• Trek Duration: Approx. 6-7 hours.
• Overnight: Homestay at Markha (approx. 3,760m / 12,335ft).

• Morning: The trail from Markha involves several river crossings again. You'll follow the path along the right bank, passing Humlung Monastery.
• Ascent: The path gradually ascends, offering increasingly spectacular views.
• Destination: Reach Nimaling, a vast high-altitude pasture where local villagers bring their livestock to graze during summer. You'll get clear views of the majestic Kang Yatse peak.
• Trek Duration: Approx. 5-6 hours.
• Overnight: Tented camp at Nimaling (approx. 4,840m / 15,880ft).

• Morning: This is the most challenging day as you cross the highest pass of the trek, Kongmaru La. The ascent is steep but the views from the top are truly rewarding.
• Kongmaru La Pass (5,260m / 17,250ft): From the pass, you'll be treated to panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, including Kang Yatse, and on a clear day, even the Karakoram Range.
• Descent: A long and steep descent will take you through the dramatic red-rock formations of Shang Gorge, passing Chuskirmo and then the village of Chogdo.
• Transfer: From Shang Sumdo, you'll be picked up by vehicle and driven back to Leh.
• Trek Duration: Approx. 6-8 hours.
• Drive Duration: Approx. 2 hours.
• Overnight: Hotel in Leh (3,500m / 11,500ft).

• Clothing:
  • Layered clothing system (base layers, fleece, down jacket)
  • Waterproof and windproof jacket and pants
  • Trekking pants (quick-drying)
  • T-shirts (quick-drying)
  • Warm woolen socks (several pairs)
  • Warm gloves
  • Woolen cap, sun hat, buff/neck gaiter
• Footwear:
  • Sturdy, well-worn trekking boots with ankle support (waterproof is ideal)
