Overview

The Chadar Frozen River Trek is an extraordinary winter expedition across the frozen Zanskar River in Ladakh, India. Meaning “blanket” in Hindi, “Chadar” refers to the thick sheet of ice forming over the river during January and February, when temperatures plunge to -30°C and below. This challenging trek, traditionally a vital trade route for locals, takes adventurers through a dramatic gorge, past frozen waterfalls and ancient caves, offering a surreal experience of walking on shifting ice. It demands significant physical and mental endurance, providing a unique immersion into the stark, breathtaking beauty and traditional life of the remote Himalayan region. • Transfer to Leh airport for your onward flight.
  • If Day 9 was a full rest day, then this is your scheduled departure day.
  • Enjoy a final breakfast in Leh.
  • Transfer to Leh airport for your onward journey, carrying unforgettable memories of your incredible Chadar Trek experience.
  • Flexibility is Key: The Chadar is a living entity, and its conditions (thickness of ice, presence of slush, water patches) can change rapidly due to weather. Your trek leader will make daily decisions about the route based on safety. Be prepared for potential changes in the itinerary or even a shorter trek if conditions are unsafe.
  • Essentials: Pack warm, layered clothing, waterproof and insulated trekking boots (and gumboots for walking on ice), a good quality sleeping bag (-20°C or -30°C comfort rating), headlamp, sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, and a personal first-aid kit.
  • Mental Fortitude: The cold can be intense. Mental preparation is as important as physical fitness.
  • Respect Local Culture: The Zanskari people are resilient and welcoming. Be respectful of their culture and way of life.
  • Physical Preparation: Start a rigorous fitness regimen (cardio, strength training, endurance) at least 2-3 months before the trek. This is not a trek to be taken lightly.

This 11-day itinerary provides a good balance of acclimatization, trekking, and buffer days, making it a more comfortable and safer experience for trekkers.
